West Irvine Elementary School Profile

About Our School:

West Irvine Elementary is a K–5 school located in a rural area along the banks of the Kentucky River. We currently serve approximately 477 students, supported by 29 certified teachers who are committed to providing high-quality instruction in a safe and supportive environment. Our leadership team includes a principal, assistant principal, and school counselor, who work collaboratively to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of our students.

Engaging Our Stakeholders:

At West Irvine, we believe that school improvement is a shared responsibility. We actively involve a variety of stakeholders in our planning and decision-making processes:

  • School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council – Composed of parents, teachers, and administrators, this council plays a vital role in decisions related to curriculum, staffing, budgeting, and school policy.

  • Estill County Schools District Team – Provides weekly school visits, professional learning opportunities, and coaching support to help us strengthen instructional practices and student outcomes.

  • Estill County Board of Education – Receives regular updates and participates in meaningful conversations about school needs and progress.

  • Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) – Currently being revitalized to help support school events, classroom initiatives, and student programs.

  • Families – Stay informed and involved through open communication, including regular updates through our school app. Nearly all families are actively engaged, helping us maintain strong school-home partnerships.

We gather stakeholder input through surveys, meetings, and direct conversations. This feedback is used to guide our continuous improvement efforts and ensure all perspectives are considered.

Our Mission and Instructional Focus:

Our mission is to:

“Become a School of Excellence by providing high-quality education for all students in a safe and supportive environment.”

We aim to achieve this through:

  • Rigorous Tier 1 instruction, aligned to Kentucky Academic Standards

  • Use of high-engagement strategies, such as those from the Thoughtful Classroom framework

  • A master schedule designed to provide targeted support through intervention blocks and push-in services

  • District-provided, high-quality instructional resources in both reading and math

Our educators regularly collaborate in planning sessions to ensure that lessons are aligned with grade-level expectations and that assessments measure true student understanding.

Achievements and Focus Areas:

Our teachers are deeply committed to continuous improvement. Through weekly planning and coaching, they focus on ensuring instruction and assessment meet the rigor of the standards and support student growth.

As we continue transitioning from an intermediate school (grades 3–5) to a full elementary school (K–5), we are prioritizing:

  • Curriculum alignment across grade levels, using tools like iReady for reading and math

  • Enhanced Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to identify and respond to student needs

  • Refinement of our PBIS framework to ensure consistency and effectiveness, particularly as we adapt it for younger learners

  • Strengthened social-emotional learning supports to help students develop critical life skills

  • Ongoing instructional coaching to improve Tier 1 instruction and ensure assessments align with the depth of the standards

These efforts are part of our commitment to fostering a culture of learning, growth, and success for every student.
